Light effects
This glowing pattern was first designed on a very large scale as a feature wallpaper in the 1950s. Our scaled-down canvas print gives an impression of how the original wallpaper would have looked when viewed from a distance. Using graded segments of yellow, oranges and red, the artist has created the effect of intensely radiating light.
The vivid yellow circles shine brightly against the deeply contrasting black background. The juxtaposition of black and yellow has a similar intensity to that of black and white, and is one of the most arresting contrasts in the artist’s palette.
By using circular segments, an impression of oscillating light has added to the incandescence of this artwork.
Restoring ‘Dazzle’
The pattern repeat is a simple grid structure and the design has six colours. This would have been comparatively complex and expensive to produce as a silk screen print, which would have been the next step in the design process.
The original painting of ‘Dazzle’ was very large, and it had suffered damage from folding and trimming down. A great deal of painstaking digital reconstruction and repair work had to be carried out by our family archivist/conservator in order to restore the complete design. After being hidden away in a portfolio under the bed for over seventy years, ‘Dazzle’ has finally re-emerged and is now available as a handmade canvas, an impressive A3 fine art print or poster, as well as a vibrant greeting card!
Although the 1950s painting is now in a delicate condition, our fine art prints are produced using Epson HD pigment inks and archival-quality papers. This ensures that the image will be very long-lasting and durable, with a far better resistance to fading or discolouration than the materials used in the 1950s original.
