We have a special trio of vintage children’s cards in our Goldcrest Gallery collection, and each tells a little story. ‘Hide and Seek‘, ‘Let’s Pretend‘ and ‘Shopping’ are charming watercolour illustrations, showing some of children’s favourite activities. Their soft colours and detailed vintage style are complemented by an illustrated story poem on the back.
Shopping: A vintage design
A trip to the shops at the weekend is fun for all the family. Our beautiful vintage design, ‘Shopping’, expresses the excitement of getting ready for a visit to the market. A central vignette pictures Mama Mouse as she dons her best bonnet, ready to go out. She wears a smart blue dress, and her bonnet is decorated with matching silk ribbons. Little Mouse looks up at her admiringly! Like her mother, she has a small shopping basket ready to take to market with her. A fresh white pinafore keeps Little Mouse’s best violet dress clean.
Children will love to look at all the details in this illustration. They can see that the little grandfather clock says 10 o’clock, so it is time for the market! Mama Mouse’s blue handbag is ready on the hall table, next to a bowl of lavender. The artist has used a cool colour scheme of purples, blues and greens inside Mama Mouse’s cottage. This gives a quiet, restful feeling, but now the front door is open and the sunshine outside is beckoning. The large scale of the wildflowers by the front path reveals that the mice are tiny in comparison!
Treats at the Market
The borders of this endearing card show an enticing selection of things to buy at the market. “We’ll buy ribbons and buttons and biscuits and sweets, and strawberry buns for our tea!” There are little pots of red and yellow country preserves, jars of pink sugar sticks and baskets of pretty sweets. Satin bows and lollipops decorate the corners of the card with warm golden and apricot colours. A wooden casket displays attractive trinkets and buttons. How can any little mouse resist?
