Coloured glass has many beautiful qualities. The transparency of the glass produces intense, radiant colours, similar to the beauty of back-lit images on screen. It is possible to overlap this coloured glass to obtain deeper colours or changing hues. Thus, red and blue coloured glass can overlap and make purple, in a similar way to mixing paint colours.
Coloured Glass in ‘Rose Window’
Three of our Goldcrest Gallery fine art prints evoke the beauty of coloured glass. ‘Rose Window‘ has been inspired by the lovely stained glass windows often seen at the back of historic church buildings. The central circular motif in the design contains three shades of blue watercolour, and three shades of violet. The paint is applied as flat translucent washes, and this gives an impression of transparency.
The design has clear pencil lines which echo the lines of lead in a stained glass window. The pale and dark strips of blue around the circles look as if they are glittering in the light. One of the attractive features of coloured glass is its light-reflective surface. The small bands of dark pink diamond shapes also seem to glint because of their paler pink edging. This beautiful print has all the radiance of a coloured glass window and provides a serene focal point for a wall or shelf.
Cobalt
Another of our prints, ‘Cobalt‘, has been inspired by the liquid and transparent appearance of molten glass. The globular blue shapes have subtle variations in colour, as if reflecting light. The swirling flow of shapes in this delicate design leads the eye from one part of the image to another. The different streams meet, and separate, then move on, like a flow of molten glass. Symmetry has been used to give coordination to the overall pattern. In this way, there is a framework of symmetry holding the swirling elements of the design in balance. ‘Cobalt’ is a distinctive and fascinating image, a unique fine art print for your home.
Blue Pools
There is also a lovely effect of transparent coloured glass in ‘Blue Pools‘. Unlike ‘Rose Window’ or ‘Cobalt’, which are original watercolours on paper, ‘Blue Pools’ is painted in acrylic washes on canvas. The five blue circles in this image have radiating concentric circles in different tones of blue. As the lines and washes cross over each other, new tones are created. Thus there is a considerable variety of subtle variations in blue: green-blues, purple-blues, dark and light blues. Acrylics are usually applied in the same way as oil paints, in rich, opaque colours. But in this canvas, the artist has thinned down the acrylic paints so that, like watercolours, they are more transparent. The translucent blue colours and soft circles in this image make ‘Blue Pools’ a calm and refreshing fine art print to have on your wall.
Our beautiful ‘coloured glass’ fine art prints are certainly worth a closer look!
