The custom of selling Christmas cards for charity began in the early 1900s, in Denmark. A Danish postal worker thought that selling Christmas cards would be a good way for charities to fundraise. The idea was very successful, and over four million cards were sold in the first year! In 1949, UNICEF produced a charity Christmas card. It was painted by a Czech girl aged seven years old, who came from a town that had received help from UNICEF after World War Two.
Alexandra Rose Charity
Today, most charities sell cards to raise funds at Christmas. At Goldcrest Gallery, we support the Alexandra Rose Charity with a donation from the profits of our Christmas cards. This wonderful organisation has done so much to help families on low incomes to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Every week families receive Rose Vouchers worth £4, or £6 if the child is under one year. The Rose Vouchers can be spent on fresh fruit and vegetables at their local market or greengrocers. Families can access the scheme through children’s centres in eight locations around the UK. This also helps the local communities greatly, as fellow market stall holders cooperate together, and younger customers are brought into the markets.
Goldcrest Gallery Charity Christmas Cards
Our range of Christmas cards includes beautiful winter scenes and snowy landscapes. ‘Winter’s Day‘, ‘Snowfall‘ and ‘Cottage in the Snow‘ soon make everyone feel in the mood for a white Christmas. And the ever-popular ‘Christmas Robin’ heralds the beginning of the festive season. ‘Ground Frost’, an interesting vintage card design featuring frost-covered country grasses, is also available as an A3 fine art print. ‘A Walk in the Snow‘ is part of a classic Christmas. In this vintage design, two cute little mice gather firewood on a snowy day.
We also have several traditional designs which illustrate the Christmas story. ‘Candle Nativity’ portrays the Baby Jesus and his parents in the stable, with the Christmas star above. And ‘Angels‘, a vintage design from the 1960s, shows two Christmas angels announcing the good news. ‘Shepherds‘ look startled and amazed by a host of angels singing joyfully. The ‘Three Kings’ bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. This lovely design from the 1960s is like a stained glass window.
Our Christmas cards are available in packs of three for £4, or individually at £2.50 each. Alexandra Rose Charity receives 25% of the price of our Christmas cards, so please help us support them, and choose one of our attractive Christmas cards!
