The Alexandra Rose Charity was founded in 1912 by Queen Alexandra. She originally came from Denmark, where she had been inspired by the idea of selling roses to raise money for people in need. In the UK, Queen Alexandra introduced the sale of silk roses on an annual ‘Rose Day’. The funds raised were distributed to those in poverty who needed hospital treatment.
Virtual Bouquets
Goldcrest Gallery charity cards are sold in aid of Alexandra Rose Charity. Our wrap-around floral bouquets were first designed to send to a relative who was convalescing in hospital. Real bunches of flowers were not permitted, so we photographed a lovely bouquet, and made it more three-dimensional by printing another view of the flowers on the back of the card. It was much admired, so we used the idea for our Alexandra Rose Charity cards (see ‘Gerbera Bouquet‘).
Alexandra Rose Charity
The present day Alexandra Rose Charity now supports families and children on low incomes, in locations all over the UK. Each child receives a weekly Rose Voucher worth £4, to buy fruit and vegetables at local food markets. Currently there are sixty market traders involved in the scheme.
Not only has this idea greatly benefitted mothers and their children, but also the market traders who participate. Their markets have been regenerated by the younger customers now coming to their fruit and vegetable stalls. Communities are being strengthened as market traders cooperate, and their customers get to know them.
The market produce is much less expensive than that in the supermarkets. Families are able to buy enough fruit and vegetables for their children without worrying about the cost. Preparing and cooking the vegetables from scratch involves whole families in regular mealtimes together. The health benefits, especially for children in their first year, are enormous.
As well as floral bouquets, our Goldcrest Gallery charity cards include countryside views, which have a lovely fresh air feeling. Our Christmas cards are also sold in aid of Alexandra Rose Charity. Send some to your friends and family this year, and support Alexandra Rose Charity in their wonderful initiative against food poverty.
