Art for All Ages
There are so many reasons why art is the perfect hobby, whatever age you are! In fact, one of the founder members of Goldcrest Gallery said they thought it was the best hobby, because you didn’t have to stop when you were old. It is possible to continue with art even into your nineties! The famous Japanese printmaker, Hokusai, was in his seventies when he began his best-known work.
Reasons Why Art is the Perfect Hobby
First of all, art is so portable. A sketchpad and pencil, or pens, can go everywhere with you. Wherever you are sitting, alone or with others, you can enjoy doodling and sketching. Even if there is hardly any spare room, a pad of paper can be held on your knees, ready to sketch an idea. If you like painting in oils or watercolours, there are some beautiful travel sets available. When you arrive at your chosen spot, unfold a mini easel, and open up a little box of paints and brushes. Then, with a small bottle of water or turps, you can begin.
Learn as You Go
Art is an activity that offers the chance to learn as you go along. There is always something new to discover, such as how each colour behaves, and what it goes with best. Even professional artists improve with practice and experience, as they try out new styles or media. Art can be self taught, or classes can be taken at evening school or in workshops.
Enjoying Art as the Perfect Hobby
When you are alone, art is the ideal pastime because you do not have to rely on anyone else taking part. There is no need for an accompanist, an orchestra, a dance partner or a sports team. Art itself can be the most wonderful company. Alfred Wallis, a retired fisherman, began painting when he became a widower. The solace of painting helped him enormously. And we have all his wonderful pictures of boats and the sea to thank him for! Sir Winston Churchill started painting as a hobby in the middle of a deep depression. Not only did he recover his equilibrium as a result, but he enjoyed his hobby so much that he looked forward to painting in heaven with new, unknown colours!
Sharing the Joy
The benefits of having art as a hobby are not only practical or emotional. You will soon find that you have artworks which give pleasure to others, as well as yourself. Your friends will be delighted to receive a hand drawn sketch or a painting. If you prefer to keep your original work, it can still be very satisfying to have a printed copy made which you can give to a friend. You could even have it made into cards for sending to others.
