The intense reds and oranges in this original 1950s wallpaper design make ‘Square Dance‘ an exciting addition to our range of canvas prints! We use fade-proof Epson HD pigment inks sealed with matte varnish, and 100% cotton canvas stretched by hand over a pine wood frame, to produce our high quality canvas prints.
Dancing colours
This vibrant pattern uses red and orange colours from the warm section of the colour spectrum, which forms an overall harmony. But optical tension is produced, not by clashing colours, but by contrasting tones of light and dark. The umber squares merge visually with the dark rusty-orange colour, yet make a sharp contrast with the pale apricot squares, which appear to move across the design surface.
Although there are only three colours, ‘Square Dance’ seems to have four or five shades because of the subtle use of contrast. The pale and dark oranges appear to change depending on the colour next to them. With a simple, full-drop repeat, ‘Square Dance’ looks much more complex than it actually is! There is a great deal of apparent movement, but the design has a calm, unified effect.
Colour-matching our ‘Square Dance’ fine art print to the original painting proved to be challenging, taking many samples and trials to arrive at the best possible match. The ink colours can be subtly affected by the paper printing surface, and we have exacting standards of benchmarking when producing our fine art prints, posters and greeting cards.
