The Influence of Folk Art

Traditional folk art provides a rich stream of inspiration for modern designers. The influence of folk art can be seen in the bright colours, simple motifs, natural fabrics and handmade embroidery, which all contribute to a delightful, homespun aesthetic.

Cornflower Blue

Many of the Goldcrest Gallery greeting cards reflect this design style. ‘Cornflower Blue‘ is one of our most popular greeting card designs. Here, a blue vase and symmetrical wild flower arrangement are derived from the influence of folk art. The blue and purple colours harmonise with smaller pink floral motifs, among field grasses and wild flowers. The beautiful, uncomplicated blue flower border incorporates a classic element of traditional folk art.

Flower Basket

Flower Basket‘, another popular design in folk art style, has simplified flowers in an array of pinks and purples. The design is punctuated with warm touches of soft orange, and the bouquet is arranged in a country-style basket. Outlines in crayon and rings of small circles give the effect of beadwork and appliqué.

Heather Spray

The beautiful ‘Heather Spray‘ also has tiny bead motifs with a symmetrical floral design. Cool blues and purples are balanced with warmer pinks and orange. This traditional folk design would be equally appropriate for a decoration on a wall or a gypsy-style dress.

Flower Fountain

A more elaborate folk design, ‘Flower Fountain‘, uses similiar country floral motifs, tucked into a symmetrical arrangement of wild grasses and leaves. The colourway of cool blues and purples includes darker shades, which contrast with the pale turquoise and pink background. The design has been created in soft crayon and coloured inks.

Tangerine

With its warm autumn palette, ‘Tangerine‘ has been designed with folk art floral motifs. Fresh green leaves and coppery foliage are arranged symmetrically, highlighted with accents of yellow and orange flower buds. The shaded background moves from cool peppermint to peach tones.

Simultaneously traditional and modern, these lovely greeting cards are ideal for birthdays, best wishes, or for keeping in touch. They are printed in long-lasting pigment ink, and make attractive mini prints to decorate a wall or shelf!
