Four charity Christmas card designs telling the Christmas Story

The Christmas Story

The night of Christ’s birth is the central theme of countless paintings, songs and musical compositions. At Christmas, young children take part in school nativity plays, re-enacting the dramatic Christmas Story. And many Christmas cards also illustrate the well-loved tableaux of that first Christmas.

Candle Nativity

The Goldcrest Gallery charity Christmas cards include four designs which depict the events of the Christmas Story. ‘Candle Nativity‘ is a beautiful blue monochrome design. It presents an ornamental nativity scene. Joseph stands beside his wife, Mary, and the newborn Baby Jesus, who is asleep in the manger. They are grouped together within a miniature stable on a mantlepiece. A candle burns brightly next to the nativity scene, giving an impression of its small scale.

Angels

The birth of Christ was heralded by angels from heaven, who proclaimed peace between God and men. Our vintage 1960s card design, ‘Angels‘, shows two angels announcing this good news to all people on earth. The artist originally produced the design by silk screen printing it in white onto a blue background. This created a peaceful, serene effect. A shower of white snow drifts gently down from the angels in the sky.

Shepherds

In the dark fields around Bethlehem, the shepherds kept watch over their flocks of sheep. Suddenly a bright light shone around them and an angel appeared to them. Our atmospheric card design, ‘Shepherds‘, shows three men silhouetted against a dark purple background. Their gestures reveal alarm and great fear of something brilliantly lit up that is just out of view in the picture. It is an exciting and dramatic moment in the Christmas story. We know that these shepherds will soon make their way to the stable in Bethlehem, as the angels directed them.

Three Kings

Shepherds were not the only ones to visit the Baby Jesus. ‘Three Kings‘ is a striking vintage card design portraying three wise men, or Magi, from the east. Traditionally, the Magi are described as kings. Our card design shows them carrying gifts for the King of kings – gold, frankincense and myrrh. The designer has created an image that is like a stained glass window. It was first produced in the 1960s as a gold silk screen print on white card. In the 1980s, the designer then re-developed this theme with added colours.
